Arabica production first began here back in 1860. Minas Gerais started growing coffee because of the discovery of gold and diamonds in the 17th century, bringing workers and people from all over the world. The demand for food products such as coffee grew, so coffee was soon planted. The landscape was difficult to move various agricultural products, which led to the usage of horses for transportation. Tropeiros, or groups of men with horses, created the trails in this rugged terrain to deliver goods, and these trails are still visible today amidst many other cultural practices preserved by the Mineiros (the people of Minas Gerais).
